What the old field names tell us

The 1840 survey recorded the name of each field. Many names preserve things that have since gone: a warren, a mine, a chapel, a gallows, a cross. Below are the names that contain a landscape or history word, grouped by theme. A name appearing once is often the more interesting. This is a keyword sort, so it will also catch some ordinary names.
