The Wreys were a Cornish family who came to Devon by marriage and made Tawstock Court near Barnstaple their seat. Their moor land was in Holne. They are tied to the Courtenays, the Palks and the Saviles by marriage, so this page is the hinge between several of the big owners.

In 1840 the tithe lists them as Henry Bourchier Wrey. 423 acres on the Dartmoor-parish tithe maps: Holne 423.

Stories from the record

Each story is backed by at least two independent sources, at least one of them a printed or official record. The sources are listed under it.

Sir Bourchier Wrey, 4th Baronet: a duel and a violent quarrel with fellow M.P.s

Sir Bourchier Wrey, 4th Baronet, M.P. for Liskeard, was twice in violent quarrels with fellow members of Parliament in the 1690s. In February 1692 he fought a duel in Hyde Park with the Hon. Thomas Bulkeley, M.P. for Beaumaris. The History of Parliament connects it with a rift in the Bulkeley family: Bulkeley's nephew Sir William Williams was a close friend of Wrey. Luttrell's diary records that five of the six men engaged, principals and seconds, were M.P.s and that two of the seconds were lightly wounded, and a letter of 5 February 1692 survives that mentions the affair. In the summer of 1694 Wrey had a violent quarrel with James Praed the younger of Trevethoe, M.P. for St Ives, in which Praed was hurt slightly in the face. Luttrell noted reports from Falmouth that Wrey had been run through the body and later that he was dead, but he lived on, still sitting for Liskeard, until 28 July 1696 and was buried at Tawstock.

Where the sources differ

Burke gives the 7th Baronet's birth as 1759 and his first marriage as 1787. All About History, WikiTree and thepeerage.com give his birth as 22 February 1757 and the marriage as 14 March 1786 at Shottesbrook, Berkshire, the Vansittart family seat. thepeerage.com cites Cokayne's Complete Baronetage (vol. 5, p. 221), and those dates are used.
thepeerage.com and WikiTree place the 7th Baronet's second marriage at Alderley, Gloucestershire, in February 1793; the Rootsweb Tawstock page gives Wotton under Edge in January 1793. The Tawstock memorial names her father as John Osborne of Monksmill.
The History of Parliament gives the 4th Baronet's wife as Florence, daughter of Sir John Rolle of Stevenstone (married 1681); Burke gives Diana, daughter of John Rolle, as the wife of the 5th Baronet. WikiTree shows both marriages, so the two Rolle marriages are probably both correct.
Burke prints the daughters Anna Eleanor and Eleonora Elizabeth in different places in the list, so their mother is not clear from that text. The Tawstock memorials and thepeerage.com place Anna Eleanora with Anne Palk and Eleonora Elizabeth with Anne Osborne.
Burke's 1869 volume gives Holne Park as the seat of Henry Bourchier Toke Wrey (Wrey entry) and as the home of Albany Bourchier Savile (Palk entry).
Sir Bourchier Wrey, 4th Baronet: a duel and a violent quarrel with fellow M.P.s. The 1694 quarrel is dated May by the Dictionary of National Biography, 'that summer' by the History of Parliament, and early June by the letters cited (Luttrell, and a letter of 5 June 1694 in the Verney papers). The History of Parliament calls the Praed affair a violent quarrel rather than a duel. The Dictionary of National Biography draws on Luttrell; the letters cited by the History of Parliament are independent of him. James Praed the elder died in 1687, so the quarrel was with his son, listed as James Praed II (born about 1656) in the 1660-90 volume and as born in 1655 in the 1690-1715 volume.

Notes

Sir Bourchier Wrey's two quarrels with fellow M.P.s are told in the story above. The Praed involved was James Praed the younger (1655-1706) of Trevethoe, not his father of the same name, who died in 1687.

Lysons (1822) lists Sir Bourchier Wrey at Tawstock among the baronets' seats.
