Pode of Slade (Cornwood)
The Podes of Slade held 798 acres in Cornwood and Harford. Slade came to the family through a great-uncle, John Spurrell, and passed in 1837 to Captain William Pode, the owner named in the 1840 tithe lists. He died without children and the estate went to his nephew.

The Slade pack that became the Dartmoor Hounds
John Spurrell Pode of Slade kept a pack of hounds, with John Roberts as his huntsman. The Dartmoor Hunt's own history says Roberts hunted them for Pode until 1827, after which John Crocker Bulteel of Lyneham bought the hounds and was Master until 1843. A printed Cornwood parish history of 1918 says Pode's hounds passed to Bulteel and grew into the famous Dartmoor Hounds. The same history says the Squires of Slade and Blachford won silver cups at races on Henlake Down in 1794 and 1795.
