Okehampton Town Council

Okehampton is a market town on the northern edge of Dartmoor, in the West Devon district, with a population of around 7,300. Long known as a gateway to the moor, the town grew up around a Norman castle whose ruins, the largest in Devon, still stand above the West Okement River in parkland now cared for by English Heritage. The town centre retains a good stock of Georgian and Victorian buildings along Fore Street, and the Museum of Dartmoor Life explores the area's farming, mining and moorland heritage. Okehampton Town Council, based at the Town Hall on Fore Street, is the elected local authority for the parish, with responsibilities spanning open spaces, community grants, allotments and civic events including the mayoralty. It works alongside West Devon Borough Council and Devon County Council, and separately from the adjoining Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council, which serves the outlying rural parish rather than the town itself.
