Nut Crackers (Site of Logan Stone)
Venton, Ashburton, Devon
Grid ref: SX 7420 7517
Nut Crackers sits on the exposed Dartmoor plateau, where weathered granite boulders punctuate the heather and grass. The site commemorates a logan stone, a delicately balanced rock that once rocked in the wind, which stood here until it was deliberately toppled in the 18th century.
- Grid reference: SX 7420 7517 (approximate, from the listing's coordinates)
Three named antiquarians recorded this logan (rocking) stone's decline across roughly a century: Polwhele, writing before 1793; Page in 1895; and William Crossing in the late 1800s. Each records progressively less movement, ending in what Crossing described as piles of rocks "from whence nature hewed it."
