Milestone On A382 About 1 Metre South-East Of Road To Caseley

Lustleigh, Bovey Tracey, Devon

Grid ref: SX 7863 8231

Part of Lustleigh →

This milestone stands beside the A382 near the turning to Caseley, a modest but characteristic survivor of the turnpike road system that transformed travel across Dartmoor and Devon in the 18th and 19th centuries. Milestones like this one guided travellers and served as fixed points for toll collection and journey planning.

Today it remains in situ, a quiet marker of a vanished transport network. The surrounding moorland landscape has changed little, though the modern A382 follows the route of those earlier turnpike roads. For walkers and drivers alike, it offers a tangible connection to the practical infrastructure that shaped movement across and through Dartmoor.
