This scheduled monument preserves the archaeological remains of a medieval settlement that once occupied the slopes east of Hartyland. The site is marked by earthworks and ground features typical of medieval rural communities on Dartmoor, where farmers and herders adapted to the moor's challenging landscape and climate.
Today the site lies within open moorland, with traces of buildings, enclosures and field systems still visible to the observant walker. It offers insight into how medieval people lived and worked on the margins of Dartmoor, and forms part of the rich pattern of settlement evidence scattered across the moor.
