Longstone Manor (Medieval Ruin)

Sheepstor, Tavistock, Devon

Grid ref: SX 5569 6846

Part of Sheepstor →

Longstone Manor lies as fragmentary stone foundations on the high moor, its scattered ruins telling the story of medieval settlement in one of Dartmoor's least forgiving landscapes. The site shows evidence of continuous occupation from medieval times, with walls and structural remains still visible amongst the heather and gorse.

Walking out to Longstone Manor rewards you with solitude and a tangible sense of how people once lived on the moor's exposed heights. The ruins sit within the wider pattern of Dartmoor's medieval farmsteads, places where families eked out subsistence from marginal moorland, before many were gradually abandoned as conditions worsened and populations moved to lower ground.
