Jim Causley

Jim Causley was born in Exeter in 1980 and grew up in Whimple, a wassailing village in East Devon not far from Sidmouth Folk Festival, where he found his voice singing with local choirs. He studied Performing Arts and Jazz & Popular Music at Exeter College before reading Folk & Traditional Music at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He rose to prominence singing with The Devil's Interval and Mawkin:Causley, and has toured with Waterson:Carthy and David Rotheray, describing himself as a "proud Devonian" whose work has increasingly focused on reviving lost songs of his home county.

Described by Mojo Magazine as "the finest singer of his generation," Causley has been nominated six times for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award and won the Spiral Earth Singer of the Year award in 2014. He performed his own song about Dartmoor tin mining, "Pride of the Moor," on BBC's Countryfile Dartmoor Special, and his 2023 album Songs of Dartmoor is a "musical tour of the moor," drawing on ballads collected by the Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould alongside music hall songs, dialect pieces and new compositions from present-day songsmiths living on the moor.
