Dartmoor's Molinia Management Trials

Commissioned by the Forest of Dartmoor Commoners Association, the Harford and Ugborough Commoners Association and the Foundation for Common Land, this research investigates how extensive areas of near-monoculture, ungrazed Purple Moor Grass (Molinia caerulea) could be managed so that more of the moor becomes accessible to grazing animals again. Extensive ungrazed Molinia is one of the reasons Dartmoor's Sites of Special Scientific Interest are not in favourable condition; the report tests management interventions such as cutting, harrowing, rolling and burning to see which are effective at opening up overgrown swards.
