How a grid reference works
Great Britain is covered by the National Grid, cut into 100 km squares that each have a two-letter name. Devon sits in four of them: SS, ST, SX and SY. Most of Dartmoor is in SX.
After the letters come the digits. The first half is the easting, how far across from the left edge of the square. The second half is the northing, how far up from the bottom. Read along the corridor first, then up the stairs.
More digits means a smaller square. 4 figures (SX 58 89) names a 1 km square, 6 figures (SX 580 892) a 100 m square, 8 figures (SX 5800 8920) a 10 m square and 10 figures a 1 m square. A 6-figure reference is usually enough to find a tor on the map.
Latitude and longitude are the other common way to give a place. This page uses the WGS84 system that phones, GPS units and web maps use. Devon is west of Greenwich, so its longitudes are negative (or marked W).
The Devon check uses a simple box around the county, so a point just over the border into Cornwall, Somerset or Dorset can pass.
