Main image: Photograph by Glavind Strachan Photography. The Corn Ridge memorial stone to the ten crew of Liberator 63926, placed in May 2022.
A memorial stone stands at the top of the ridge above the West Okement valley, set up in May 2022 for the ten men killed when US Navy Liberator 63926 crashed on this hillside on 28 December 1943. Royal Navy Commando helicopters flew it to the site, ahead of the 80th anniversary.
- Grid reference: SX 56570 88327
- Remembers: The ten crew of PB4Y-1 Liberator 63926, VB-110, US Navy
- Installed: May 2022
- Project: Dartmoor National Park Authority and the Ministry of Defence; the stone was provided by the Duchy of Cornwall
It replaced an aluminium plaque that had been fixed beside an engine section in the valley below, which was removed around May 2022. A second stone was placed at Tiger's Marsh for the B-17 that crashed there on Christmas Day 1943.
The wreckage itself lies on the slope below, see the crash site listing. The ridge is close to two military danger areas, so check the firing programme before you walk there.
