Mesolithic Complex (Flooded)

Coombe Cross, Bovey Tracey, Devon

Grid ref: SX 8111 8312

This flooded archaeological site preserves evidence of Mesolithic occupation on Dartmoor, when the moor was home to nomadic hunter-gatherers thousands of years before Bronze Age settlements took hold. The waterlogged conditions that now conceal the site have paradoxically preserved organic remains, tools, bones, and traces of daily life, that would otherwise have vanished.

Today the site lies beneath water, a reminder of how dramatically Dartmoor's landscape has shifted. For those interested in the moor's deep human history, it represents an often-overlooked chapter: the people who hunted and foraged across open moorland long before the landscape we see today took shape.
