Dartmoor CAM

Dartmoor CAM describes itself as a very large record of walking on Dartmoor. It was the life's work of Keith Ryan, who recorded and photographed the walks; he died in 2023 and the site is now maintained by Simon Avery.

Its walks page counts 503 walks, up to November 2021 and not counting the leats, with 24,218 images. A walk's page opens with a list of everything it visits, tors, crosses, quarries, tramways, leats, bridges, mills and ruins among them, and each has a map of the GPS track with labelled place-markers: zoom in, drag the map and click a marker to read its label. Below the map come the photographs, with notes and references to the sources, for example on how the tors were formed, the history of the quarries and tramways, or the gunpowder works at Powder Mills.

There are also pages of notes, such as Tin on Dartmoor, a weather page and a page of links to other Dartmoor sites.

The new site

The old pages carry a banner inviting visitors to the successor site, Dartmoor Walking, which presents 44 self-guided walks with parking details, directions, maps, GPX tracks and photographs; many of its walks were recorded and photographed by Keith Ryan.

Go deeper with Dartefacts

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.
