It is set on and around a fictionalised Dartmoor, drawn from a research visit Doyle made to Princetown and the moor in 1901 with journalist Bertram Fletcher Robinson, to whom the book is dedicated.
A descriptive 1891 account of Dartmoor's rivers, tors and prehistoric hut circles, opening with Crossing's own description of the moor as Devon's "liberal mountain urn."
