Moor Poets is “a community of friendly poets based in and around Dartmoor in Devon” – for more, see moorpoets.weebly.com. This evening of poetry readings features Jean Sprackland, reading and talking about her work, plus an Open Mic session.

Jean Sprackland is an award-winning poet and writer. Her latest collection, Goyle, Chert, Mire, was described in the Guardian as “profound and enduring”.

It takes the form of a book-length sequence about place, time, illness and recovery, and the poems emerge from deep engagement with a particular and little-known place: the small springline valley where she lives, in the Blackdown Hills close to the Somerset/Devon border.

Jean’s previous collections include Green Noise, Sleeping Keys, Hard Water, and Tilt, which won the Costa Poetry Award in 2008.

She is also the author of three books of non-fiction, most recently Night Vision: In search of the true dark, and in 2012 she won the Portico Prize for her book Strands: A Year of Discoveries on the Beach.

Jean is Professor of Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University, where she teaches on the MA in Poetry and in Creative Non-Fiction. She has been a regular tutor for the Arvon Foundation for over twenty years.
