Whiteworks Tin Mine

Grid ref: SX 6133 7103

Whiteworks is one of Dartmoor's most evocative industrial sites, where Victorian tin miners carved their livelihood from the moorland bog. The mine's remains—engine houses, settling tanks, and the deep shafts themselves—puncture the landscape like a record of human ambition etched into the granite and peat. Walking among the ruins, you sense the scale of the operation and the harshness of working conditions on this exposed plateau.

The site sits on the open moor, exposed to the elements much as it was 150 years ago. Visiting requires effort and care, but rewards you with both archaeological detail and the atmospheric quality of Dartmoor's industrial heritage. The weathered stone and surrounding moorland create a stark, moving picture of the region's mining past.
