Two pillow mounds near Trowlesworthy Warren House

Pillow mounds are low, elongated earthworks built to provide habitat for rabbits in a managed warren. These two examples form part of Trowlesworthy Warren, a scheduled monument complex that speaks to medieval land management on Dartmoor's fringes. Rabbits were valuable livestock, their fur and meat prized resources, and warrens required careful engineering to help animals thrive in moorland terrain.

Today the mounds are subtle features in the landscape, best read by someone familiar with how medieval people shaped their surroundings. They sit within a broader pattern of warren systems that survive across Dartmoor, traces of a time when the moor's edges were worked and inhabited more intensively than we might now imagine.
