Tinners Works

Grid ref: SX 5309 7940

Tinners Works is an archaeological site where the moorland itself tells the story of medieval and post-medieval tin extraction. The site comprises spreads of stone rubble, shallow trenches, and worked granite—the physical traces of labourers who scratched a living from Dartmoor's challenging landscape. These aren't dramatic ruins, but intimate evidence of how people transformed the moor to meet demand for tin.

Walking the site rewards patience and attention. The scatter of stones and weathered workings blend into the moorland fabric, making it easy to walk past without noticing. But once you begin to read the landscape, the effort and skill of tinning becomes apparent. This is archaeology as landscape archaeology—a chance to connect with centuries of human industry on the high moor.
