Shuttamoor Mine sits among the heather and granite boulders of central Dartmoor, one of hundreds of mining sites that shaped this landscape from medieval times through to the 20th century. The ruins—tumbled stone walls, mine shafts, and processing areas—tell the story of tin extraction in one of Britain's richest mining regions. Little remains intact, but that's part of its appeal: nature has reclaimed what industry once tore away.
This is a site for those who want to read Dartmoor's industrial past in broken stone and overgrown workings. There's no visitor infrastructure, no interpretation—just the moor itself, the wind, and the evidence of generations of miners who worked this harsh terrain. Finding it rewards a closer look at how people lived and laboured on the high moor.
