High on Dartmoor's exposed slopes stand the fragmentary remains of a house that once sheltered the man who oversaw mining operations here. The ruins—mostly foundation stones and partial walls—are scattered among heather and gorse, with little to soften their austere setting. This was never a comfortable posting; the captain lived at the edge of the moor's mercy, managing the complex business of extracting tin and copper in conditions that tested both resolve and endurance.
The site offers few answers and many questions. What drove someone to build and live here? How long did they stay? The moorland offers no plaques or interpretation, only the physical evidence of ambition and labour written in stone. For those interested in Dartmoor's industrial heritage, the ruins reward close looking—and the walk across open moor to reach them is its own reward.
