Round cairn near White Hill

This round cairn is one of several burial monuments scattered across the White Hill summit area, forming what archaeologists call a cairn cemetery. Such clusters are typical of Bronze Age funerary practice on Dartmoor, when cremated remains were deposited in stone-built mounds across the high moorland. The cairn sits in open country with wide views across the plateau and surrounding tors.

Today, like many Dartmoor cairns, it appears as a low stony mound, sometimes heathery or lichen-covered. The monument is scheduled for protection, recognising its archaeological importance as evidence of how Bronze Age communities used and buried their dead on the moor. Walking the White Hill area, you encounter the layered history of Dartmoor's ancient past.
