Powder Mills

Grid ref: SX 6274 7735

Deep in a secluded Dartmoor valley, the Powder Mills stand as haunting reminders of the moor's industrial past. Built in the early 1800s to manufacture gunpowder, the mills harnessed water power from the stream running through the gorge—a location chosen for its isolation and the water it provided. Explosions were an occupational hazard; the valley's remoteness was deliberate.

Today, weathered stone walls and collapsed structures are slowly being reclaimed by moss and fern. The ruins sit within dense woodland that clings to the valley sides, creating an atmosphere quite unlike the open moorland above. Visiting requires scrambling through rough terrain and navigating the overgrown site itself, but the combination of industrial archaeology and Dartmoor's wild landscape makes it a compelling destination for those interested in how the moor was once worked and changed.
