Length of reave near Cox Tor

This scheduled monument preserves two distinct periods of Dartmoor's human use. A length of reave, the characteristic stone-built field boundary of the Bronze Age, crosses the landscape here alongside three military emplacements from the First World War. The reave represents the organized land division of prehistoric farmers working the high moor, while the concrete and earthwork structures reflect the later military presence that shaped parts of Dartmoor during the twentieth century.

The site lies on open moorland south and south west of Cox Tor, where both features remain visible to those walking the area. The juxtaposition of Bronze Age and modern remains is typical of Dartmoor, where successive generations have left their mark on the landscape without entirely erasing what came before.
