Irregular aggregate field system near Cox Tor

This scheduled monument preserves a layered record of Dartmoor land use, from Bronze Age settlement through to post-medieval agriculture. Stone hut circles mark where ancient communities lived on the exposed moorland, their foundations still visible in the turf. Overlaying these are irregular field systems of different periods, showing how successive generations reshaped the landscape to suit their farming needs.

The site sits on the north-east slope of Cox Tor, a location that speaks to the long human relationship with Dartmoor's high ground. Today a walker across this stretch of moor can read the landscape itself: the circles and stone boundaries that remain are the accumulated evidence of how people made their living here across millennia, adapting to the moor's demands.
