County Bridge Stone Set Into Garden Wall Of Ponsworthy House About 5 Metres North East Of Its South Gate

Ponsworthy, Ashburton, Devon

Grid ref: SX 7017 7396

Part of Ponsworthy →

This boundary marker has been repurposed into the fabric of Ponsworthy House's garden wall, positioned about five metres north east of the house's south gate. Such stones were commonly used across Dartmoor and Devon to mark the limits of parishes, manors, or common land. The stone's incorporation into a later structure tells a small story of how old boundaries were adapted and absorbed into the landscape as settlements and properties evolved.

Visitors walking around Ponsworthy will pass close to this humble but tangible link to the moor's administrative past. It is a quiet reminder that many features of the modern landscape, including garden walls and property lines, often follow much older divisions of the land that shaped Dartmoor for centuries.
