Coaxial field system near Cox Tor

Grid ref: SX 5266 7631

This scheduled monument preserves evidence of a coaxial field system and settlement dating to the Bronze Age or later prehistory. The layout, with its regular parallel field boundaries, is characteristic of ancient agricultural organisation on Dartmoor. The site lies in the upland landscape west of Cox Tor, part of the network of prehistoric and early historic settlements that shaped the moor's high ground.

Today the remains are visible as earthwork features in the moorland. Like many Dartmoor field systems, these boundaries may have been maintained and reused through medieval times. The site forms part of the archaeological palimpsest that makes Dartmoor's interior so rich in evidence of long human occupation and land management.
