Enclosure near Merrivale Bridge

This scheduled monument consists of an enclosed settlement of stone hut circles and associated enclosure, located on the open moorland northeast of Merrivale Bridge. The site dates to the Bronze Age, when Dartmoor's higher ground supported scattered farming communities who built these distinctive circular stone dwellings as shelters against the exposed upland climate.

Today the remains are modest but legible, visible as low stone rings and walls in the heather and grass. The setting is characteristic of Dartmoor's ancient landscape, with views across moorland that would have been familiar to its prehistoric inhabitants. The site forms part of a wider pattern of Bronze Age settlement across the moor, testament to a period when Dartmoor was considerably more densely populated than in later centuries.
