Wheelpit (60', Dartmoor's Largest)

Grid ref: SX 7671 7581

Wheelpit is one of Dartmoor's most striking industrial relics—a substantial shaft sunk deep into the moor during the tin mining era. At 60 feet, it remains among the largest surviving examples on the National Park, a dramatic testament to the extractive industries that shaped this landscape for generations.

Standing at the site, you're confronted by raw geology and human ambition: the moorland simply falls away. The shaft's presence is humbling, a reminder of the labour that went into wresting tin from Dartmoor's granite bedrock. It's a place that rewards contemplation, particularly for those interested in industrial archaeology and the hidden economic history beneath the open moor.
