Two pillow mounds near Blackaton Cross

This scheduled monument comprises two pillow mounds and scattered tin streamwork earthworks on Trowlesworthy Warren. The pillow mounds are the buried remains of medieval rabbit warrens, characteristic ridge and furrow structures built to support commercial rabbit farming. These warrens were valuable medieval assets, managed as part of moorland resource use alongside tin mining and grazing.

The tin streamwork earthworks indicate the long history of tin extraction on this part of Dartmoor, where tinners worked the valley floors and slopes. Today the site is visible as subtle earthwork features in the moorland landscape, part of a broader pattern of medieval and later exploitation that shaped Trowlesworthy Warren and the surrounding country.
