Two cairns

These two cairns form part of a substantial cairnfield on Longstone Hill, a pattern of burial and ritual monuments that speaks to Bronze Age use of the high moor. Cairnfields like this one are among Dartmoor's most characteristic archaeological features, built over many centuries as communities marked significant places and honoured their dead across the open landscape.

Today the cairns are modest stone heaps set within rough moorland, easily missed among the bracken and grass. They reward a closer look, though, as part of understanding how deeply inhabited and structured this upland world once was. The wider cairnfield context makes this a good vantage point for thinking about Dartmoor's prehistoric past.
