Two cairns

These two cairns are part of a cairnfield, a concentration of burial mounds that dates to the Bronze Age, when Dartmoor was more densely settled than it is today. Cairnfields like this one were built over several centuries as communities used the higher ground for both ritual burial and grazing.

Today the cairns sit on Longstone Hill as low, grassed mounds, easily missed among the moorland heather and grass. They are a scheduled monument, protected for their archaeological importance. Walking this part of the moor, you are treading through a landscape that held meaning and memory for people three thousand years ago.
