Two cairns

Longstone Hill holds a cairnfield, a scatter of stone burial mounds from the Bronze Age when Dartmoor's uplands were more intensively settled and used. The two cairns that give this site its name are part of that broader landscape of ritual and burial, built by communities for whom the high moor was home and workplace. These structures have endured for over three thousand years, their stones gradually settling into the turf.

Today the site sits on open moorland where the monuments are visible as low stone heaps among rough grass and heather. Walking here, you are moving through an ancient Dartmoor landscape little changed in its essential character. The cairnfield as a whole speaks to Bronze Age life and death on the moor, and to the continuity of the Dartmoor environment across deep time.
