Two cairns

Two cairns form part of an extensive cairnfield that spreads across Longstone Hill, evidence of Bronze Age burial and ritual activity on the moor. These stone-built mounds were raised over cremated remains and represent a significant period when communities used the high moorland intensively, leaving their dead across the landscape in clusters that speak to patterns of settlement and movement.

Today the cairns sit among the rough grass and heather of open moorland, their stones weathered but still substantial. The broader cairnfield context makes this a valuable archaeological site, revealing how Dartmoor's Bronze Age people arranged their monuments across the terrain. It is a scheduled monument, protected for its historical importance and the insights it offers into how the moor was inhabited and used thousands of years ago.
