Tor cairn near Cox Tor

This tor cairn lies 170 metres south of Cox Tor summit, one of several burial monuments that make up a Bronze Age cairn cemetery scattered across this part of Dartmoor. The cairn itself is a characteristic rounded mound of stone, built over a thousand years before the Iron Age settlements that would later appear on the moor. Such concentrations of burial cairns suggest this was a significant ritual and burial landscape in prehistory.

Today the site sits in open moorland, part of the wider archaeological story written across Dartmoor's high ground. Walking here, you move through country that has held human memory and burial practice for over three thousand years. The cairn is a scheduled monument, protected for the evidence it carries of Bronze Age life and death on the moor.
