Three cairns

These three cairns are part of a substantial cairnfield spread across Longstone Hill. They were built during the Bronze Age, when Dartmoor's uplands were more densely settled and used for burial and ceremonial purposes. Today they survive as low stony mounds scattered across open moorland, much as they have for thousands of years.

The cairnfield context is important: individual cairns were rarely built in isolation on Dartmoor. This group sits within a landscape shaped by prehistoric people who cleared and grazed the high ground. Walking here, you sense both the monumentality of these ancient structures and their integration into the working moor itself.
