Three cairns

Three cairns form part of a substantial cairnfield on Longstone Hill, evidence of Bronze Age burial and ritual activity on the open moor. These stone mounds, built to cover cremated remains or mark significant places, cluster within a wider scatter of similar monuments across the hilltop. Walking across this exposed ground, you can pick out the individual cairns among the heather and grass, their stones weathered but still distinct against the landscape.

Longstone Hill commands views across the southern Dartmoor plateau. The cairnfield as a whole tells of sustained use of these high, windswept spaces in prehistoric times. The scheduled monument status protects three of these cairns specifically, preserving them as part of Dartmoor's rich Bronze Age heritage. For walkers, the site offers a tangible sense of deep time layered into the moorland itself.
