Hut circle 510m NNE of Hart Tor

This scheduled monument is one of several hut circles scattered across the moorland north-northeast of Hart Tor, part of a Bronze Age settlement that hugged the contours of Dartmoor's high ground. Stone circles and the foundations of round dwellings like this one are among the most tangible links to the people who inhabited the moor thousands of years ago, building their homes where they could tend livestock and make use of the open grassland.

Today the site offers little more than the low stone footprint of a single dwelling, easy to overlook among the heather and rough ground. Yet standing here among the scattered settlements of the Moor, you're looking at the archaeology of a working landscape that has barely changed in its essential character. The view out across the moorland from this height would have been much the same then as now.
