Hut circle 270m north of Hart Tor

This is one of several stone hut circles forming an unenclosed settlement on the moorland north of Hart Tor. The ruins are characteristic of Bronze Age occupation on Dartmoor, when communities built clusters of round stone dwellings across the high ground. The hut circles remain as low stone foundations, often marked by a circular depression where the interior floor level sank with time.

Visiting the site today, you find yourself in open moorland typical of central Dartmoor. The remains are modest and require some archaeological eye to read, but they speak to thousands of years of human presence on the moor. The settlement pattern and construction suggest a period of relatively intensive Bronze Age farming and herding activity, later largely abandoned as the climate cooled and the moor became marginal for settlement.
