Hut circle near Sharpitor

This scheduled monument is the remains of a prehistoric roundhouse, likely dating to the Bronze Age when farming communities occupied Dartmoor's higher ground. The hut circle survives as a low stone ring, the foundation of a dwelling that would once have been topped with timber and thatch. It sits on the moor east of Sharpitor, part of a wider pattern of settlement and land use that shaped this landscape thousands of years ago.

Visiting the site means walking across open moorland. The hut circle is modest in size and outline, but standing among the heather and gorse you can feel the long habitation of this place. Such structures are common across Dartmoor, evidence of how intensively the high moor was once used and lived in, before climate and social change drove people to lower, gentler ground.
