Sixteen hut circles

This scheduled monument consists of sixteen stone hut circles clustered on the north-east slope of Cox Tor, part of an unenclosed settlement that likely dates to the Bronze Age. The hut circles are the stone foundations of roundhouses, their circular form still visible in the turf and rubble today. They offer a tangible connection to the people who lived and worked on this high Dartmoor ground in the distant past.

Visiting the site means walking the moorland itself, reading the landscape as you would a book. The settlement's position, neither at the very summit nor in the valleys below, reflects choices made about shelter, water, and access to grazing. Standing among these stones, you are in a place shaped by human settlement millennia ago, now returned to open moor.
