This scheduled monument is the surviving remains of a prehistoric settlement, likely dating to the Bronze Age when Dartmoor supported a more substantial population than it does today. The site sits on open moorland south west of Cox Tor, in the landscape where these early communities built their homes and worked the land.
Visiting today, you will find earthwork traces of what was once lived in and worked: the foundations and outlines of roundhouses and associated structures, now low banks and platforms in the grass. The exposed moorland setting gives a sense of the terrain these inhabitants knew, though the landscape has changed considerably over millennia. The site is one of many such settlements scattered across Dartmoor, markers of a time when the moor was busier and more intensively used.
