Pillow mound near Great Trowlesworthy Tor

Trowlesworthy Warren is a scheduled monument that preserves the physical traces of medieval rabbit farming on Dartmoor. The site includes a pillow mound, an artificial raised bed created to provide dry warren ground, and a characteristic V-shaped gully that would have channelled water away from the burrows. These features reflect the medieval demand for rabbit meat and fur across Devon and beyond.

Today the earthworks are subtle but readable in the moorland landscape north west of Great Trowlesworthy Tor. Walking across this part of Dartmoor, you can sense how communities shaped the moor to their needs, creating specialist resources that sustained both local and regional economies. The gully and mound remain quiet witnesses to centuries of land use.
