Pillow mound near Trowlesworthy Warren House

This pillow mound is a low, elongated earthwork forming part of Trowlesworthy Warren, a medieval rabbit warren established on the open moor. Pillow mounds are artificial breeding grounds for rabbits, which were valuable livestock in the medieval and post-medieval periods. The warren would have supplied meat and fur to local communities and estates.

Today the mound survives as a subtle feature of the moorland landscape northeast of Trowlesworthy Warren House. It stands as evidence of how Dartmoor's open ground was actively managed and exploited in past centuries, before the moor became known primarily for its wild character.
