Pillow mound near Trowlesworthy Warren House

This pillow mound is one of several earthworks that make up Trowlesworthy Warren, a medieval rabbit warren on Dartmoor's central plateau. Pillow mounds are long, low artificial ridges built to provide suitable habitat for rabbits, which were valued for meat and fur. The warren would have been managed and maintained by local landowners as a productive resource.

Today the mound survives as an earthwork in the moorland, part of a broader pattern of medieval land use across Dartmoor. Walking across this upland terrain, you can read the layers of history in the landscape: Bronze Age remains, medieval agriculture, and the open moorland that followed. The site is a Scheduled Monument, protected for its archaeological significance.
