Pillow mound near Trowlesworthy Warren House

This pillow mound is an artificial earthwork formed as part of Trowlesworthy Warren, a medieval rabbit warren worked into the moorland landscape. The mound's characteristic rounded form would once have provided burrows and nesting grounds for rabbits, a managed resource of some value. It sits within the wider complex of warren earthworks that still shape this corner of Dartmoor.

Today the mound is visible as a low ridge in the moorland, a subtle but tangible reminder of how people shaped the moor for livelihood and sustenance. Walking here, you encounter layers of Dartmoor's working past: the warren sits among other archaeological features that speak to centuries of use and adaptation.
