Pillow mound near Great Trowlesworthy Tor

This pillow mound forms part of Trowlesworthy Warren, one of Dartmoor's surviving medieval rabbit warrens. Pillow mounds are low earthen banks built to create suitable habitat for rabbits, which were kept as a valuable food source from Norman times onwards. They appear as long, low ridges across the moorland and are often found in groups.

The warren lies on the open moor north west of Great Trowlesworthy Tor, where the exposed high ground and thin soils would have suited rabbit management. These sites are now Scheduled Monuments, part of Dartmoor's extensive heritage of medieval land use and the long story of how people have shaped the moor.
