Pillow mound near Great Trowlesworthy Tor

This pillow mound forms part of Trowlesworthy Warren, a medieval rabbit warren on the open moor northwest of Great Trowlesworthy Tor. Pillow mounds are artificial earthworks created to provide habitat and breeding grounds for rabbits, which were a valuable resource for food and fur. The mound itself is a low, rounded ridge typical of these structures, designed to offer shelter and suitable conditions for warrens.

Today the mound survives as an understated feature in the moorland landscape, best understood as part of the broader warren system. It speaks to medieval land management and the use of Dartmoor's uplands for resources beyond grazing. The site is accessible to walkers exploring this open part of the moor.
