Pillow mound near Great Trowlesworthy Tor

This pillow mound is part of Trowlesworthy Warren, a medieval and post-medieval landscape shaped by the farming of rabbits for meat and fur. The mound itself, long and low, was constructed to provide optimal habitat for warrens and would have been carefully maintained as part of a valuable manorial resource. Such features pepper the higher moorland, marking places where control over the land was expressed through deliberate earthworks.

Today it sits on open moorland near Great Trowlesworthy Tor, its form subtle but readable in the landscape. Walking here gives a sense of how the medieval economy extended into the moor itself, and how Dartmoor was managed not as wilderness but as productive ground. The warren is now scheduled for its historical importance, a reminder that the moor's character has always been shaped by human enterprise.
