Motte and Bailey

Mill Leat, Buckfastleigh, Devon

Grid ref: SX 7256 6843

This motte and bailey stands as a stark reminder of Norman ambition on the Devon moors. The raised mound and its surrounding ditch cut a distinctive profile across the bracken and heather, a geometric interruption in the rolling landscape that speaks of medieval power and control. Built in the generations following 1066, it represents the Norman consolidation of these wild territories.

The site rewards a visit for more than its historical significance. Standing here, you experience the exposed moorland much as medieval sentries once did, unobstructed views across the watershed, the wind constant, the sense of isolation profound. The earthwork's survival, largely unploughed and undeveloped, makes it one of Dartmoor's most legible windows into the feudal past.
